Alternative/Additional Diagnoses

By now, it's pretty clear that there's a lot of shit wrong with Chris, more than can be attributed to simple Autism. Although his shitty upbringing and shitty personality have also played a role in making Chris who he is, there could also be additional mental, hormonal or physiological problems at work making him even worse.

Chris's encounters with professional psychiatrists have been brief and infrequent. He was diagnosed with autism (we think) as a child. According to Chris his prognosis was poor, and the doctors predicted Chris wouldn't be able to speak, write his name, or graduate high school. Although Chris wouldn't speak until age 7 and was developmentally delayed, Chris would go on to prove the doctors wrong by not being able to shut up about himself, signing his name below every piece of shit he churns out (including drawings in snow) and graduating and not being able to move past high school. Chris was also evaluated by two psychiatric residents in 2004 following an incident with PVCC dean Mary Lee Walsh. During this interview Chris showed off his Sonichu medallion and showed his homemade Pokemon cards to the interviewer. The residents concluded that Chris wasn't a danger to himself and others and unleashed him upon the world.

Chris also had to see a therapist for a period (who charged him a mere $25 a visit) as a condition of his return to PVCC, and sometimes talks with pastoral counselor Rocky Shoemaker, whose only professional qualifications are "big fan of Jesus."

It may be unlikely that Chris will ever see another psychiatric professional, at least until he's put in some kind of institution or halfway house (where he's complain about the food and lack of recreational activities), but in the meantime some people who have been following Chris have chimed in with their own unprofessional diagnoses.

Personality Disorders

Antisocial Personality Disorder

Antisocial Personality Disorder is the latest DSM-IV term for what used to be deemed psychopathy or sociopathy. The ICD-10 uses 'Dissocial Personality Disorder'. Persons with Antisocial Personality Disorder lack empathy and remorse, and thus don't care if they hurt other people in pursuit of their own selfish goals. They are usually violent and quick to anger. They often live parasitic lifestyles and lack realistic, long-term goals and are unable to maintain serious, committed relationships, keep friends, or keep jobs. Despite their many negative qualities, they can be superficially charming at times. Although this describes most serial killers, not all people with APD are horrifically violent.

Does this describe Chris?

Chris can be superficially charming at times. He was able to maintain a small social circle in high school and college (Chris was in college in the loosest sense of the term), the latter being centered around Anna McLaren, and probably ending when she moved back to Utah to increase her Mormonism. Chris was able to form a friendship on some level with Megan Schroeder, although this was more about Chris wanting to get into her pants. In all cases, Chris couldn't be bothered to maintain the friendships after graduation, or after the friend in question moved. Chris effectively ended his friendship with Megan through constantly groping her, hitting on her, and drawing crude pornography of her and putting it on the Internet.

Chris lives a parasitic lifestyle, aspires to live a parasitic lifestyle, and has his fictional characters live a parasitic lifestyle (although Sonichu is paid to defend the city, the city is only attacked because of Sonichu). Chris's "Love Quest" is less about a pretense for sex than it is finding a girlfriend and later wife to mooch off of. Chris receives disability money, food stamps, and has a handicapped parking permit despite not being physically disabled. Although Chris pays his parents rent, they pay for his gas and food and he has also said that the car he drives is his Mom's car.

Chris has stolen his parents' credit cards to buy video games and downloadable content for video games. Chris has also perpetrated a crude scam where he purchases Guitar Hero track packs from a store, enters the code on his Playstation to download the content, and returns the track packs to the store for a refund or sold them on eBay, although entering the code makes the track packs useless to the next buyer. Furthermore, he has bragged about how easy this is to do in a YouTube video while not claiming personal responsibility (in a typical Chris fashion, he blamed this for the current economic recession).

Chris's long-term goals are unrealistic and laughable. His goals are somehow to receive tons of money because he thought up Sonichu and get laid because of it. Although he's made several half-assed attempts to make money off of Sonichu (making videos for investors and sending his game ideas to Nintendo), most people would have realized by now that Sonichu isn't a profitable idea. If the polite rejection letter from Nintendo didn't tip them off, the dozens of people telling them the exact same thing would have. As mentioned before Chris only attended college in the vaguest sense of the word, and probably then only to please his parents: Chris selected a second or third rate community college and spent six years there. He originally was to major in marketing, but after finding out he'd have to leave Charlottesville to find a position in marketing started work on a Computer Aided Drafting and Design Certificate. Although knowing AutoCAD is a kind of a job requirent for certain things, it's unlikely that this alone would make Chris employable at any "real" job, especially since his resume consists of two months of Wendy's (where he was fired) and volunteer positions that weren't really volunteer positions. Also, Chris would later admit he had no idea what kind of jobs he could get with a CADD certificate.

To say Chris has severe issues with anger is an understatement. Although not constantly filled with smoldering anger throughout the day, Chris gets upset easily and displays anger grotesquely out of proportion to the situation at hand. He has recorded himself threatening death on several people, and has drawn a comic where he shoots one of his unarmed enemies in the legs specifically to maim him. For the most part, Chris's anger is passive-aggressive: Chris will draw his enemies into his comics and beat them up there, or create them in a video game and fight them there. One one occasion he's shot darts at a picture of Adam Stackhouse (and wished death upon his preteen sister) for beating him in a video game contest (that Chris cheated in). And then Chris will go out of his way to show these things to others as a threat. Fortunately for the world, his urge to sit on his ass all day always wins against his war to kick ass. And Chris's ability to kick ass is severely limited by his poor physical condition. Even if Chris did obtain a firearm it's unlikely he'd take the time to learn how to aim properly and would just invite his enemies to his house so he could shoot them.

Although so far these behaviors just describe a selfish, foolish, immature asshole, a key component of Antisocial Personality Disorder is lack of empathy, guilt and remorse. Chris doesn't give a shit about anyone about himself, and to some very extent his mother -- but that's only because she validates him emotionally and supports him. If his mother encouraged him to seek employment and/or professional help for his many problems it's likely he'd rage at her too. And when Chris hurts people he doesn't instinctively and intuitively understand 'why' they were hurt. When Megan expressed shock, fear and disgust over Chris's drawing of him fingering her, Chris didn't understand why she was offended by this. He actually made things worse by not apologizing and describing the mechanics of him fingering her in an additional email, assuming she didn't view as much pornography as he did. Many of Chris's fake internet girlfriends have died, yet Chris doesn't give a shit about them after they're out of his life, quickly moves on to the next one, and then depicts their deaths in his comics in a cruel, graphic and insensitive manner. And then he complains that they made him feel bad. Although this could indicate that Chris is feeling bad and expressing it in the most fucked-up way possible, it's more likely that this is just some vague, negative emotion he feels since he's been inconvenienced in such a way by their deaths. ("How dare you die and make me feel sad!") It should also be noted that Chris has a limited understanding of what human emotions are supposed to be like and tries to mimic them and often displays a blunted or shallow affect -- where he appears cold, robotic and disinterested, and speaks in a monotone -- both hallmarks of a psychopath.

With Chris's limited and childish understanding of death, this would suggest Chris could easily kill without remorse if he had any drive or initiative whatsoever.

Arguments against Antisocial Personality Disorder:

People with Antisocial Personality Disorder tend to be manipulative: that is they use the charm they have to get people to do their bidding, whether this is sexual favors, conning them out of money, or keeping them in a one-sided and parasitic relationship. If Chris truly was a psychopath he would have at least gotten laid by now, even though his true desire is to have a woman wait on him hand and foot. Although Chris has some plans to get Megan into bed, these were overly-complicated and unrealistic (win video game contest, give her the prize, take a trip to Seattle and seduce her in the hotel room). Chris doesn't have any real qualms with sleeping with teenage girls, and would have realized by now that they are less experienced and might be swayed by the attention of an older man. If Chris was a psychopath he probably would have found an unattractive and socially awkward teenage girl by now and turned her into a sweetheart from the ground up. Also, he wouldn't have insisted on using so many weird gimmicks to attract women (like the attraction signs) and would have been clever enough to ditch the Sonichu medallion because it makes him look like a weirdo.

Chris's criminal behavior is quite limited, too. Although he's been in trouble with the law before (for a car accident and loitering in public with his stupid sign) and has certainly acted in some kind of violent fashion (in Mary Lee Walsh's office), and has stolen his parent's credit cards and has probably sold some of their property on eBay without permission, Chris lacks the criminal versatility often found in psychopaths. With no sense of remorse, a huge sense of entitlement and unlimited free time you'd expect a psychopathic Chris to do something more ambitious and productive with his time, or at the very least shoplifting. Instead, Chris is content to sit on his ass receiving the equivalent of $5 an hour in benefits. Also, some autistics can get into trouble with the law due to their limited understanding of socially acceptable behavior.

Also, Chris's interests are weighted towards the childish. Aside from a passing interest in pornography and sex toys most of the video games he likes are aimed at children, and he still plays with Legos and he isn't ashamed to admit it (and film himself doing so). He legitimately enjoys Mary Poppins and children's cartoons as an adult, and not in the way stoner college kids could enjoy Scooby Doo or something. You'd expect a psychopath to have slightly older (if not more mature) tastes in media which resonates with their predatory attitude towards life. Despite enjoying the occasional horror movie, Chris is basically a giant 9-year-old.

Most of the behaviors that can be explained by Antisocial Personality Disorder could also be described by autism -- which Chris clearly suffered from as a child to some extent. If Chris indeed has Antisocial Personality Disorder, it's something that he's evolved into over the years, becoming more twisted and monstrous as time goes on.
