Conflict with Authority

Chris has never understood authority well. From the age of one and a half, he has constantly failed to respect the wishes of people in power. This dislike is partially his fault and partially the fault of his parents.

Chris's Understanding

Chris seems to understand that someone with authority is someone who has the power to hand out punishments. Chris being Chris, he thinks that what he sees of something is the entire thing. As demonstrated by his email to Kathleen, he believes that the way anyone treats him is the way they treat everyone. Hence why he thinks that any police officer, manager, or other person of authority that opposes him is an evil person. It does not occur to him that these people have other things to do and other faces they show.

Naturally, Chris is convinced that a person of authority simply lounges about their office all day, signing the odd paper and tossing out punishments whenever they feel like it. He is completely ignorant of the other responsibilities these people have, as well as the limits their power has.

Hence why, in the comic, CWCville is not a democracy but an absolute monarchy.

List of Authority Figures Chris Has Failed to Respect

• When Chris was one and a half years old, he failed to let his babysitter finish a conversation she was having on the phone. When she exercised her authority and sent Chris to his room, he deemed her "evil".
• When Chris was brought to the principal in fourth grade for an unknown infraction, he constantly ran away from the principal until he had to be restrained. His parents later tried to sue the school.
• Chris's ban from the Boy Scouts of America seems to have resulted from him disrespecting the Den Mother. When she exercised her authority and banned Chris from the organization, Chris's parents tried to sue.
• When Chris was given an "F" in English during 10th grade, he acted as if the teacher had given it to him as a personal insult and not as an evaluation of his academic progress.
