Dawn of War is a *craft-style real-time strategy game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Good Bits

Lots of Abilities

Pretty much everything has a special ability you can use to affect the battle in some way, and you can get even more by attaching a leader to a squad or in some cases by using your race's special thing, such as soul essence(Dark Eldar) or faith(Sisters of Battle).

Lots of Races

The game features the following playable races:

  • Space Marines
  • Chaos
  • Eldar
  • Orks
  • Imperial Guard
  • Tau Empire
  • Necrons
  • Dark Eldar
  • Sisters of Battle

Of course, some of them are pretty similar(Space Marines, Chaos and Sisters of Battle are all pretty much the same race, but with slightly different tactics). And the balancing isn't perfect(Necrons seem to either be stupidly powerful or just stupid, depending on some mysterious arcane force that can change halfway through a match...). And some take a lot of getting used to(if you play Tau, enjoy getting steamrolled for the first dozen matches you play). But the sheer number of playable races allows for a lot of replayability, which more than makes up for the problems with some of them.

Soulstorm campaign is cool

The Soulstorm expansion has a very different campaign mode: Rather than being a series of missions, it's a Risk-style map. I'm not really a fan of the campaign missions, preferring to play skirmish matches against the CPU, so this is perfect; it adds a sense of purpose and an overall goal to my endless skirmish matches. Now, yes, it gets a bit repetitive sometimes and I would like a bit more variety in the situations that arise in a campaign, but it's a really nice idea that I hope more games use in future.

It's pretty, but not slow

I get a consistently high framerate, even when then graphics settings are maxed. Awesome. It does look very nice, although in true Warhammer style, it's messy as fuck.

Can be satisfying

Sometimes, finishing off that Dark Eldar opponent is just a little bit too satisfying.
