I've dealt with this when similarly troubled, and have found it takes little effort. The connection is a little harder to immediately see than reading it and thinking "he has no idea how to form English phrases", but given the reasoning (failure to proofread) I think it makes more sense to refer to his writing skills rather than his language skills.
