This is a formatting template used to display International Phonetic Alphabet characters. The International Phonetic Alphabet is a system of phonetic notation used to represent the pronunciation of words. Since the IPA uses many symbols not found in the Latin alphabet, some browsers may not display it correctly. This template resolves that issue, so a section of text with IPA characters will display properly on any browser.
The format for using this template is as follows:
{{IPA|[ˈfiːzɛmeɪ]}}
- Displays:[ˈfiːzɛmeɪ]
Note that without the template, the text would display like this:
[ˈfiːzɛmeɪ]
This may not look any different depending on what browser and settings you use. But if you were viewing this page with IE6, for example, it wouldn't look right without the template.
Generally, there isn't much need for IPA notation on the CWCki, but in some cases it may be needed for words or names Chris made up (Reldnahc Notsew Naitsirhc), or if it's a difficult-to-pronounce word to begin with, and Chris confuses the issue further by mispronouncing it himself (Reggie Fils-Aimé).
