Translations
I didn't realize YouTube does this but YouTube translates captions. Obviously it's not the world's best but I've looked at the Spanish translation and it's not too bad. Perhaps our resources might be better utilized at just making captions and letting YouTube do the rest, but on the other hand some things get lost in translation. What do you all think on the matter? Universal Subtitles
Universal Subtitles. Would this help? This might be an interesting thing to try, because it'd let people edit the subtitles live, much like any wiki page, and you can just time the subtitles once and translate the subs to other languages. The user-edited subs also don't show up when you just view the video through YouTube, so this wouldn't need to change the process much: people could edit the subtitles on this site, let the archivists know that there's a new set of subtitles or a new language version up, and they can then export the sub file from universalsubtitles and import it in YouTube. --wwwwolf (wake me when you need me) 04:07, 21 February 2011 (PST)
