To be honest, the Gecko Mantis thing is a nod to the troll Gecko Mantis (who probably chose the name for the reasons you mentioned) and not because of Chris's direct experience.

- I think that there's a case to be made for keeping it because of the troll lore, particularly since the stuff like the Liquid Chris Saga is incomprehensible without a basic-level knowledge of Metal Gear Solid. - Oddly, Liquid Chris's page only links to Metal Gear Solid once, as a pipe from "Solid Chris". As for Chris there are only a few minor references.
