The Impulse Gay Social Club was a non-profit gay social club located on 1417 North Emmet St. in Charlottesville, Virginia. In mid-2015, it was an important social outlet for Chris, as he seemed to be the happiest he'd ever been in the years following his dad's death. However, he gradually stopped going. The Charlottesville location has been closed since 1 July 2020.
Gender dysphoria, also known as gender identity disorder, is a psychological disorder in which a person identifies as another gender and experiences distress from the discordance between gender identity and actual anatomy. Many people who have gender dysphoria become transgender, although this is not always the case. Chris was officially diagnosed with the condition in 2016, after he made efforts to gender transition prior to this point.

In August 2014, Chris came out as a "Lesbian Identified Male," or as he eventually put it on his OKCupid profile, "a Female, Lesbian Soul in this Male Body; a Lesbian Transwoman (Very Interested in Women) (no operation)." In early October, Chris learned that troll sweetheart Catherine would be in Charlottesville for Halloween, and he began to make plans for them to wear matching costumes in public with a "Lesbians Through Time" theme. When Catherine bailed, Chris decided to make the best of it, and attended the Halloween party at Impulse alone. While his non-relationship with Catherine died shortly thereafter, it did have one lasting positive impact in giving Chris a new hangout. While the details remain unclear, he apparently began to show up to Impulse on a regular basis and even made what he considered friends.
Chris's gender identity has been the subject of intense discussion by observers, and it's been debated whether his feelings of gender dysphoria are real and the logical conclusion of Chris's own feelings and lived experiences (given that he overemphasized his own "straightness" and acted like what he thought was a stereotypical man, before feeling more comfortable acting like a stereotypical woman and embracing being transgender and bisexual instead), whether they are just the result of a combination of a warped understanding of gender dynamics stemming from being exposed to too much fiction combined with years of gaslighting and manipulation by trolls, or whether they are just just an elaborate attempt by Chris to find a boyfriend-free girl (or boy), although there is evidence for these different interpretations. No matter what the case may be, the reality is that Chris has began showing preference to crossdressing in early 2011 and later fully committed to a transgender lifestyle since the end of 2014, with some evidence of Chris's gender dysphoria becoming clearer with the power of hindsight.
