Suitressing refers to the practice of oversimplifying a person or thing from Christory into a familiar archetype that they may not entirely fit into based on superficial similarities. People may do this as a way to point out how a recent event "rhymes" with an event from the Classic Era. When this is done, one may then put more prominence on the similarities over the differences, making them appear near identical. This also gives the unintended consequence of generalizing a person based on said archetype.

The practice is named after the Suitress Policy, a policy directed towards Fiona Cooper which has taken cues from the Wallflower Policy. While the policy was in place, Fiona was referred to as "The Suitress" and compared to figures like Megan Schroeder and the Wallflower, despite her having fairly superficial similarities to the both of them. While Fiona was a gal-pal of Chris, and ultimately did not troll or enable him, and has been noted for being a victim of trolling to some degree like Megan or the Wallflower were, these are ignoring many significant factors that makes Fiona differ from them, such as her reaching out to Chris despite all of the information available on him and for the repeated warnings from staff members.

Outside of the policy, people have also tried to pinpoint what specific labels Fiona might fall under ("Troll", "Bystander", or one of the Unholy Quintet), or have compared her to other Christorical Figures or Chris himself on the basis of superficial similarities she had with them.

Types of Suitressing

Anti-Suitressing

Anti-Suitressing boils down to calling something a "good counterpart" of something else, again only accounting for surface-level understandings of both things.

Other Examples of Suitressing

  • Calling people like the Idea Guys, Jacob Sockness, or Isabella Janke the "replacement Clyde" solely for how they affected Chris, when there's little to no similarity between them and Clyde as individuals.
  • Assuming Praetor was a group of Idea Guy-like trolls, like the Watchmen did, simply because they're a group that befriended Chris and did edgy shit.
    • By that same token, assuming every new friend that Chris obtains is secretly some troll or ween.
  • Calling Lainchu a "troll persona" on the basis of enabling Chris being involved, despite Chris creating the character himself, and asking for the Watchmen to roleplay as the character.
  • Comparing the drama surrounding Imposter Lainchu to that of Liquid Chris, like The WCT did, on the basis of it involving an "imposter".[1]
  • Assuming that Flutter is a figure similar to either Megan or Fiona, despite what little information there is on her, just because she's a gal-pal of Chris.
  • Calling oneself the "good Idea Guys" because you enable Chris without necessarily harming him, as The WCT did.[2]

Reasons to Avoid Suitressing

False Equivalence

Rhyming doesn't equate to repetition

The common phrase from Mark Twain is "History Doesn't Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes".

Not everything needs a "nega" counterpart
