VHS is a standard for consumer-level analog video recording on cassettes, developed by JVC and first released in Japan on 9 September 1976, then in the United States the next year on August 23. During the early 1980s to late 1990s, VHS was the dominant home video format, before being supplanted by its successor, the DVD, first released in 1996 and overtaking VHS by the early 2000s. Chris has had a lengthy history with VHS, having been born when it was beginning to take off.
Chris's experience with VHS
- Much of the footage from the Yep, I'm on TV :) DVD were transferred off of worn-down VHS tapes, including both of his TV appearances.
- Chris recorded his Mario Kart 64 Lego Raceway, Song of Christian, The City of Cwicville Tour!, and Animal Crossing videos to VHS.
- Chris also had a sizable collection of softcore porn recorded to videotape.[1]
- Chris is shown in ChandlerFamilyChristmas2004 attempting to get his father to choose between a DVD or VHS copy (which he apparently recorded/transferred himself) of Fraggle Rock.
- In August 2016, Chris attempted to sell his copy of Disney's Aladdin for a whopping $3,000, under the incorrect guise that "Black Diamond" Disney tapes were worth a lot of money. In reality, this is only the price that some sellers are asking for; it's highly unlikely people are spending that much on tapes that can be purchased for as little as a penny on Amazon.
- In Chris's third house tour, recorded on 9 March 2018, he shows off boxes with old VHS tapes in them, saying they belonged to "Mr. C". These are likely the remaining VHS tapes in his collection that weren't lost in the house fire.
- In August 2018, Barb threw out a number of Chris's old VHS tapes, alongside his classic T-shirt. Chris, in response, abused and humped a pillow effigy representing Barb in front of her[2]. It is unknown if Bob's VHS tapes were part of the dumping, but it's probably unlikely.
- Chris has a retro-themed Sonichu called VHS.
