However, the Game Boy Camera could only hold thirty pictures at a time. That isn't nearly enough for even half a lap, so what Chris had to do was take the thirty pictures, edit them appropriately, string them together into an animation, record the animation, and then repeat the process over and over. To make the sudden starting and stopping seem more "natural", Chris put a second of static at the end of each set of pictures. This didn't do anything to change the fact that the twenty-second song Chris used for his animation got more and more grating as it restarted again and again.

Mario Kart 64 Lego Raceway is a video series from Chris's "I'm on TV" DVD. It was filmed using a Game Boy Camera in 1998, when Chris was still in Manchester High School.

Production

The Game Boy Camera is a bulky Game Boy game with a camera attached to the top of it you could place into your Game Boy and use to take grainy black-and-white pictures. Afterward, these pictures could be played with or edited in various ways; you could draw on them, make them sprites in a handful of minigames, or string them together to make an animation, like Chris did. Using the camera and his LEGO, Chris made a stop-motion animation of the cars racing around his Lego city, firing shells (or in this case, Star and Circle shapes) at each other set to some appropriate music.

This didn't do anything to change the fact that the twenty-second music clip Chris used for his animation gets more grating every time it is used.

However, it is impressive that Chris expended so much time and effort at such a complex and frustrating task, especially considering that, years later, he would draw Sonichu comics without any planning or practice, and upload YouTube videos without bothering to check them over first.

In the actual race videos, it's near impossible to tell what's going on, since most of the racers look exactly the same in poor quality black-and-white pictures. It doesn't help that the racing is regularly interrupted by confusing sequences where outsiders attack the racers.

The sequences also appear to have been transferred onto VHS tape at some point, as evidenced by the vertical stabilization problems, the noise at the bottom of the picture at the beginning of the first video, and the general picture quality of the video. Chris most likely got the video on VHS by hooking him the Game Boy Camera to a Super Game Boy for his SNES and then recording that way.

Plot

Most of the video is taken up with depicting four kart races based on Mario Kart 64. As with most all CWC projects, the characters competing are all Chris's family, gal-pals, and characters from his favorite media series - in this case, Lego, Power Rangers, Super Mario, Dexter's Laboratory, a ninja and, bizarrely, "Andy Griffit".

However, what is very easy to tell is that Chris was perhaps even more of a God-moder in his younger days than he is now, perhaps only now eclipsing his past self with his actions in Sonichu #10. In all three races that Chris appea.

He also spends some time in-between races describing his Power Rangers team, mostly made up of him, Cole Smithey, and various Gal-Pals and video game characters, such as Mario and Mega Man. He also spends almost a minute (and several takes worth of animation) showing several karts link up into the KART MEGAZORD, a powerful weapon never seen by the public eye until Sonichu #9, and even then it hasn't really done anything yet.

In short, Mario Kart 64 Lego Raceway was a fairly good indicator of the path Chris would start down only two years later, when he first came up with the idea for Sonichu.
