Equestrian Calendar
In Sonichu 12-9, Chris created a new calendar for Equestria. Since this comic is a glorified Brony fanfic, Chris may have been inspired from other brony works which also use plot devices such as time moving at different rates or the years and days being longer/shorter.
The calendar in its current state makes no sense and a correction has been speculated.
Origin
The names were copied from the seasons of planet Sera in Gears of War. He has also changed and added things as he (or the Idea Guy) pleases. In the games, there are two more months named sorrow and brume. Chris probably did not include these because sorrow sounds too sad for his hugbox and he has no idea what brume means.
The order of these has been retconned atleast once by Chris. In the comic, the order is said to be
- Storm
- Gale
- Thaw
- Rise
- Bloom
- Heat
- Harvest
- Frost
- Reap
- Bounty
But a problem arises in the third arc of the book. Chris breaks up with Jessica Quinn's self insert Diamond Melody on the 7th day of Bounty in 2017. But he met up with his new sweetheart on the 24th of Frost of 2017. This is a paradox as is Night Star supposed to meet Kun after the breakup.
Chris never realised this error, but fixed the calendar by mistake in a tweet in June 2018, where he stated the order again. This time around Frost occurred after Bloom thereby fixing the paradox.
Days
The speed of rotation along its axis is faster for Equestria when compared to Earth. In one year, there are exactly 457 days instead of the 365.25 on Earth. So there aren't any leap years in Equestria.
But this causes a problem - Chris mentions the dates on different planets at the same time as the characters keep jumping around between Equestria and CWCville. He has confirmed 6th January 2018 and 6th of Storm of 2018, 31 of May and 31st Bloom of 2018 and 24th of Rise and 24th of February of every year fall on the same date. This is impossible as the number of dates in the Equestrian calendar are much greater than the Gregorian calendar and only 1 date can be in phase, not 3.
Something much more likely is that the number of days in both the calendars is the same and the 457 day calendar has been retconned.
Dates mentioned in the comics
- 24 Rise 1982 - Birthdate of Christian and Night Star
- Met Diamond Melody on 17 Heat 2017
- Summer festival few days before 17 Heat 2017
- July 4th celebrations few days away from 17 Heat 2017
- Broke up with Diamond Melody on 7 Bounty 2017
- Race organised by Discord on 17 Bounty 2017
- Met Kun Hanphuc on 24 Frost 2017
- Woke up from coma on 6 Storm/January 2018
- Final arc of 12-9 began on 31 Bloom/May 2018.
Months
Most months are similar to the months in the Gregorian calendar with the exception of Heat which is made of June, July and August. These are in the correct order, the way Chris intended it be.
- Storm - January
- Rise - February
- Gale - March
- Thaw - April
- Bloom - May
- Heat - June+July+August
- Harvest - September
- Reap - October
- Bounty - November
- Frost - December
Chris has only ever mentioned the 457 day year once in Sonichu 12-9, but due to other problems in the comic such as the months being completely off and paradoxes being formed, the 457 day calendar can be rejected. Due to certain dates matching up perfectly every year, it can be confirmed that Equestria and Earth have the exact same time of revolution.
Years
As stated earlier, the calendar cannot have more or less than 365.25 days. As atleast three dates match exactly. And 24 February/Rise always falls on the same date and month. The only date that can overlap between a gregorian calendar and the 457 day calendar is the first day of the year. But since 24 Feb/Rise isn't the first day, it cannot overlap every single time.
Conversion
Due to the calendars being the exact same except for the month of Heat, conversion between them is extremely simple.
- To convert any except Heat/June, July or August to the Gregorian format or vice versa, simply change the name of the month according to
- Storm - January
- Rise - February
- Gale - March
- Thaw - April
- Bloom - May
- Harvest - September
- Reap - October
- Bounty - November
- Frost - December
- To convert from Gregorian to Equestrian or vice versa in the month of June, July and August or Heat -
Gregorian to Equestrian
- If in June, replace June with Heat and the date should be the same.
- If in July, replace July with Heat and add 30 to the date.
- If in August, replace August with Heat and add 61 to the date.
Equestrian to Gregorian
- If the date is from 1 and 30 of Heat, replace Heat with June.
- If the date is 31 to 61, subtract 30 from the date and replace Heat with July.
- If the date is from 62 to 92, subtract 61 from the date and replace Heat with August.
